Ball State University Theater and Dance is renovating our old spaces as the new spaces are still under construction. This season we are working out of non-traditional spaces that the department has never used before. As we are a year out from our move into the new building, our scene shop is now out of an old 35’x18’ science room about ¼ the size of our old scene shop. This was the first show produced out of the temporary scene shop. The initial scenic design was bigger than what was able to be produced out of this new shop. I facilitated the meeting to scale down the show and still be true to the scenic designer's initial design. When we were planning out the season the university scheduled a concert during one of our techs. We were required to strike the show into an outside pop up tent next to the venue then put it all back up for tech the next day. Part of putting on the production at The Brown Family Amphitheater was being in communication with risk management and fulfilling their wishes. The build process facilitated these changes by allowing an access port at the side of the Columns to weigh them for the wind. I included an access port at the back of the Front Steps to weigh the Front Steps as we could not mount them to the stage. The director requested cardboard cutouts of the Column Units for spacing and found that 6 Columns did not allow for enough space for the movement of bodies onstage. As such I reduced the Columns down to 4. The stage was not flat due to the humidity warping the stage and so I lifted the Kickboards off the ground to keep the stage from affecting the Center Platform. Everything was painted to protect from rain and fire.
